Al Helm: Martin Luther King in Palestine*
A Documentary Film
Tuesday, November 12, 6pm
Shiloh Baptist Church – 1211 South I St, Tacoma
An African-American gospel choir travels to Palestine to participate in a play with Palestinian actors about MLK and nonviolent resistance. As Christians, these Americans are excited about going to the Holy Land, but they are unsure about working with Palestinians, as all they know about Palestinians is that they are supposedly terrorists. This is a story of discovering common ground and of being caught off guard by the daily indignities, humiliation, and injustice that their new Palestinian friends suffer under Israeli occupation. Nonetheless, it is a story of reconciliation and the power of art and Love.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with local Palestinian Dr. Lubna Alzarroo, UW Seattle, and Dr. Clayborne Carson, Professor Emeritus at Stanford University and founding director of the King Papers Project.
“I have seen the humiliation of the Palestinians at checkpoints and roadblocks, suffering like us when young white officers prevented us from moving about.” Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
