Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church
7410 South Twelfth Street, Tacoma, WA 98465
Event: Drive-by “Ashes to Go” at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church
Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at 1 pm and 7 pm
This year, St. Andrew’s will offer “ashes to go” at 1:00 to 1:30 pm and 7:00 to 7:30 pm (continuing as long as folks are coming) in front of the Church. All persons are invited to drive up (remain in your car) and open the window for a brief prayer and the imposition of ashes with words reminding us all of our mortality and God’s forgiveness.
St. Andrew’s will live-stream an Ash Wednesday service at 12 Noon through their website: www.saintandrewstacoma.org. The service will be recorded and on the website for later viewing.
Wednesday, February 17 marks the beginning of Lent, a season of spiritual renewal and preparation for the great joy of Easter. Ashes are an ancient sign of penitence. From the Middle Ages it became the custom to begin Lent by being marked in ash with the sign of the cross. The reminder that we are dust turns our attention to the creative power of God, and God’s ability to heal the brokenness in our lives when we offer that brokenness to God. That turning to God is the work of Lent, preparation for the celebration of Easter.
The imposition of ashes will observe social-distancing protocols – masks will be worn and ashes will be imposed with a single-use applicator.
