WORKSHOP #1: DISMANTLING THE DOCTRINE OF DISCOVERY + LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
- Developed and presented by Irvin Porter, Pastor, Church of the Indian Fellowship
- Tuesday, January 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Pacific Time
- Examines the concept of public international law originating from various church documents in Christian Europe in the mid-1400s to justify the domination and oppression by its monarchies as they invaded the Western hemisphere. Issues currently facing Native Americans today as a result are examined. + Acknowledging the legacies of brokenness can orient us towards the messy, sacred work of repair, but in themselves, they are not repair. This could include learning about local Indigenous understandings of land and sacred sites, conceptualizing land as “who” instead of “what,” and problematizing the idea that we can own the land. If we’re in relationship with the land, what responsibilities to her might we name in our acknowledgment? How might shifting our relationship with land change the way we are in relationship with God?
Registrants for this workshop will receive a Zoom link the day prior to the workshop. Registrants also will automatically receive registration information for the next workshop when it becomes available.
