Sister Lucy Kurien, founder of Maher Ashram in Pune, India will be with us to share stories and updates on the ongoing growth and development of Maher. Sr. Lucy also founded the Interfaith Association for Service to Humanity and Nature and has a lot to teach the world about eradicating poverty with love, respect, and the use of sustainable, grassroots practices.
Sr. Lucy founded Maher in 1997 with the construction of a safe house in response to the dire oppression women were facing. Today, Maher has grown into a social-service organization helping thousands of people. Maher’s primary focus is still sheltering and caring for women and children in crisis, they also conduct grassroots projects in villages and slums, focusing on education, microloan co-ops and environmental sustainability.
Fighting for women’s rights and for an end to the acceptance of violence against women has been on the forefront of Maher’s agenda since the beginning. Maher is steadfastly interfaith. All are welcome at Maher regardless of religion, gender, caste, color, creed, or social status.
“Maher” (in the Marathi language) means “Mother’s Home”: a haven of hope, belonging and understanding. Maher’s mission is to help destitute women, children and men from all over India exercise their right to a higher quality of life, irrespective of gender, caste, creed or religion.
