Attend the 3rd annual FREE genealogy workshop designed specifically for individuals with African American Ancestry. For African Americans, finding ancestors and exploring your heritage can be challenging, in part because so few records have been digitalized. This is changing rapidly. Learn the multitude of FREE research tools you can use from home to find your ancestors. Learn how to write your own personal and family history for your descendants. Receive one-on-one live help and leave the event with a suggested Willie Stewart, a noted Tacoma educator and civic leader will be the keynote speaker. Leading workshop classes will be guest presenter Thom Reed, Director of African American Research and Vice President of Familysearch.org. Reed is a collaborative partner in the historic “10 Million Names Project” dedicated to recovering the names of the estimated ten million men, women, and children of African descent who were enslaved in pre- and post-colonial America between the 1500s and 1865. Mr. Reed serves on the national board of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS) as the vice president for genealogy.

New this year—a program geared for youth ages 12 and up “Your Proud Family–How to Make Your Family History Louder and Prouder”! At this parallel event youth will learn how get things digitized, keep records, collect family stories, and keep their family tree alive.

A FREE lunch will be provided. Find information on specific classes and how to register in person or online at https://www.tacomaaafhe.com
